Name of Standard - IS 1124 1974 METHOD OF TEST FOR DETERMINATION OF WATER ABSORPTION APPAREND SPECIFIC GRAVITY AND POROSITY OF NATURAL BUILDING STONES
Scope of Standard - This standard lays down the procedure for determining ture specific gravity of natural building stone under condideration. Compressive strength test for stone used for random rubble masonry, Ashlar masonry and other stone wall foundation
Covered Topics in Standard
A = Weight of oven dry test piece in g,and
B = Quantity of Water Added in 1000 ml jar Containing the Test Piece in g.
Note -The apparent specific gravity shall be expressed as a numerical value for saturated surface dry sample at the recorded temperature and shall be the average of three determination.
- The apparent specific gravity shall be calculated from the following formula
Apparent Specific Gravity = [A/(1000-C)]
WhereA = Weight of oven dry test piece in g,and
B = Quantity of Water Added in 1000 ml jar Containing the Test Piece in g.
Note -The apparent specific gravity shall be expressed as a numerical value for saturated surface dry sample at the recorded temperature and shall be the average of three determination.
- The water absorption shall be calculated from the follwoing formula
Water Absorption = [(B-A)/A]X100
Where
A = Weight of oven dry test piece
B = Weight of saturated surface dry test piecein g
The water absorption shall be expressed as percentage by weight of oven dry sample and shall be the average of three determination.
Note -The water absorption shall be expressed as percentage by weight of oven dry sample and sahll be the average of three dimension
- The apparent porosity sahll be calculated from the follwoing formula:
Apparent Porosity = [(B-A)/(1000-C)]X1000
Where
A = Weight of Oven dry test piece in g,
B = Weight of saturated surface dry test piece in g
C = Quantity of water added in 1000ml jar containing the test piece in g
Note - The apparent Porosity shall be expressed as a percentage and shall be the average of three determination.
- The true porosity shall be calculated from the following formula
True Porosity = (True Specific Gravity - Apparent Specific Gravity)/True Specific Gravity
Note -
Identification of the sample, date when sample was taken and type of stone shall be reported.
The size and shape of test piece used in the tests shall be indicated.
A description of the way in which the test pieces were prepared shall be included.
